Did You Know?

The Steel Story
Steel is all around us – in cars, white goods, bridges and buildings so here’s some fascinating facts about a strong and sturdy character!

Carbon Collaboration
Steel is made mainly from iron ore which in its pure form is quite soft, however all you need to do is add 2% of carbon and you’ve got one of the toughest, strongest metals around – now that’s a tough team!

Intriguing Ingredients
You may store your soft drink cans in a fridge – but did you know that your fridge may be made of them?  It’s true!  All steel cans are 100% recyclable and can be made into products like cars, white goods and more steel cans!

Energy Saver
It takes around 872 kg of iron ore, 488 kg of coal and 41 kg of limestone to make one tonne of steel - and that takes a lot of energy!  However recycling steel scrap saves 75% of the energy it takes to make steel from these raw materials.  So do your bit for the environment and remember – recycle!

Oz in the Recycle Race
In a recent study, Australia was ranked 9th in the world in terms of steel can recycling - we recycle 56% - that’s around 750 million steel cans a year.  Well done Oz – keep up the good work!
